Why Coastal Heat Makes Hyperhidrosis Harder to Ignore
Living near the coast sounds great until your body won't stop sweating.

Murrells Inlet sits right where salt air meets thick humidity for most of the year. That combination pushes even normal sweating into overdrive. But if you already deal with hyperhidrosis, the climate here turns a frustrating problem into a daily battle. We hear it from people all the time.
"I changed shirts twice before lunch." That's not dramatic. That's real life for a lot of folks around here.
Humidity is the real issue. When the air is already heavy with moisture, your sweat can't evaporate the way it's supposed to. Your body keeps producing more because it thinks it hasn't cooled down yet. So you end up drenched, not because you're doing anything wrong, but because the weather won't let your body's cooling system work right.
The International Hyperhidrosis Society reports that people with this condition can sweat four to five times more than what's needed to regulate temperature. Now add 85% humidity on a July afternoon near the MarshWalk and you've got a recipe for misery.
Here's what makes it worse for people in our area:
- Outdoor dining, fishing, and walking are part of daily life, not optional activities you can skip
- Lightweight clothing shows sweat marks faster than heavier fabrics
- Sunscreen and insect repellent trap heat against the skin
- The "cooling off" period after coming inside takes longer when indoor humidity stays elevated
And it's not just summer. Murrells Inlet stays warm and sticky well into October. Some years even November feels tropical. That extended season means people here deal with excessive sweating for eight or nine months straight.
We see patients from the Burgess area and Garden City who've tried every antiperspirant on the shelf. Nothing holds up against this climate. The problem isn't willpower or hygiene. It's a medical condition made louder by where you live, your nervous system is sending signals that don't match what your body actually needs, and the heat amplifies everything.
You don't have to rearrange your whole life around sweat. That's the part most people don't realize until they walk through our door.
Hyperhidrosis treatment is one of the services available at our Murrells Inlet health spa.
Treatment Options Available at a Medical Spa
Most people who walk through our door in Murrells Inlet have already tried the drugstore antiperspirants. The clinical-strength roll-ons. The powders. None of it worked, and they're frustrated.
We get it. That's actually why a medical spa is the right next step.
The treatment we use most often for hyperhidrosis is Botox injections. Same product you've heard about for wrinkles, but here it does something completely different.
It blocks the nerve signals that cause your sweat glands to produce. We use a small needle to inject tiny amounts just beneath the skin in the target area, and after a week or two, you'll notice dramatic relief. The International Hyperhidrosis Society cites studies showing Botox reduces underarm sweating by over 80 percent, and the effects usually stick around for four to six months.
This is what the Botox for hyperhidrosis process looks like when you come in for treatment:
- We ask you about your symptoms and decide which areas need treatment.
- We clean the treatment area and mark it for accurate injection placement.
- Each set of injections takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete in both underarms.
- You leave the office and continue on with the rest of your day.
Armpits aren't the only areas we treat. We can do it for palms and foreheads too, although the palms are usually more tender so we discuss beforehand what that is like.
, we're told we should have done this years ago.
We also offer Dysport, which works through a similar mechanism. Some people near the Inlet Square area prefer one or the other, so it helps to have a choice. We help you make that decision.
This is what makes us a medical spa and not a random med-spa. We take an integrative approach. If hormonal imbalances may be causing your hyperhidrosis, we also provide hormone therapy and blood work services in our office. Rather than being referred to multiple providers around town, you get all the answers you need in one place.
What To Expect at Your First Appointment
You walk in the door and we talk. That's really how it starts.

Before the needle touches your skin, we need to know what you're coming to us with. We're not all the same as it relates to hyperhidrosis. Some of our patients from Murrells Inlet get sweat marks on their work shirts throughout the workday. Some can't hold the wheel in their car for more than a few minutes without needing to towel off their palms.
So we listen before we look.
Consultation
We'll ask you several questions about the areas that you sweat most in, how long you've had the problem, and what you've already tried. Many people have lived with it for years before finally making an appointment with us., someone says they wish they would have come in sooner.
Our team takes a look at your medical history and what medications you're taking. Some medical conditions and medications can increase sweating, and we want to eliminate those as potential causes or them. We can certainly discuss blood work if it would provide any further insight.
What your assessment entails
When you arrive for your consultation, we'll first listen to your history and then perform a brief physical assessment. This will typically involve:
- Locating the areas where you are the most bothered, which will likely be in the axillary, palmar, or forehead regions.
- Possibly conducting a starch-iodine test to identify the specific locations of the most active sweat glands.
- Explaining treatment options for hyperhidrosis, such as Botox and the benefits that you can expect with these treatments.
- Putting together a plan of action specific to your lifestyle and needs.
Your entire consultation will typically take up to half an hour. Depending on your schedule and readiness, if you're ready to start your Botox injections for hyperhidrosis right away, we'll be able to schedule your first session right then.
Wondering whether this is really the solution? Simply reflect on the last time you missed out on something or you wore a jacket in July because of the sweat that would otherwise be visible. That's your motivation.
We're a licensed aesthetic medical clinic in Murrells Inlet. This isn't a "shot in the dark" and you're being assessed by trained and experienced medical professionals. Come prepared with your questions and concerns. We'll help you find the answer.

The Spring Season for Summer-Ready Relief
There is something that many people tend to forget. Scheduling your hyperhidrosis treatments is most effective when you give it your due time.
Every year we're inundated with phone calls in June from area residents in Murrells Inlet who would like to begin sweating in less time before the summer season starts. However, the time frame to schedule these treatments for hyperhidrosis is in either March or April. You'll want to start the treatment at least that far in advance so it can reach its full potential before the first heat wave of the season. This also provides us the opportunity to adjust the treatment plan if you require a follow up appointment or two.
Scheduling is Everything
While most injections for hyperhidrosis typically produce the most effective results within two weeks, this is certainly not the case for everybody. If you find you are excessively sweating over many different areas, we may have you scheduled for a return visit to fine tune the treatment plan. That adds an additional two weeks to the timeline.
Here's the ideal timeline that you should follow to you are dry and confident at least by Memorial Day Weekend:
- Book and attend your initial consultation at the start of March so we can talk about your specific symptoms and goals.
- Attend and complete your first treatment appointment by mid-April.
- Attend a follow-up assessment 2-3 weeks after the completion of the first treatment.
- Experience all of the benefits before summer begins.
Our patients who follow this schedule say that the results are exactly what they wanted and needed being able to walk without having to worry about sweat stains or being able to wear the clothes they want to wear, without being self-conscious of the sweat or other people's opinion of the sweat. These patients were even able to walk around without dreading the heat and other embarrassing events in front of others.
The spring months for the appointment slots are filling up rapidly.
The locals here near the Gardens and on the inlet tend to start planning their summer fun pretty early, and we find that March fills up fast. If you wait until you're complaining about a 90-degree day to take action, you've already lost a step. But look: if you are reading this in the dog days of July, then it's not too late; we can still help. Next year, though, it's worth the effort to plan ahead.
If you'd like to get on the books and beat the summer heat, just reach out to give us a ring and we'll work something out.
Tips on Identifying a Successful Treatment
The change will come fast, with our Murrells Inlet hyperhidrosis treatment clients noting a difference after just three to seven days from their initial session. However, treatment isn't about having skin that is completely devoid of moisture the very first day after treatment; it's about the difference in the amount of sweating that you do. We explain this to each of our patients: look for small improvements first. Your hands do not sweat the day after a handshake.
You no longer soak through your shirt at the MarshWalk during a lunch break. You no longer have a spare shirt in your purse just in case. Those are the victories that indicate we're on the right track.

During the first few weeks of your treatment, here is what to watch for:
- Reduction in wetness in the treated area that occurs within five to ten days.
- Absence of sweating in activities where that previously happened.
- Less concern over sweating in social situations, especially those involving physical contact.
- Need for less frequent application of absorbent materials or antiperspirants.
Every week, we see someone who has a follow-up and tells us, "I didn't even think about it." That is an indicator that the treatment is effective. When the sweating no longer controls your life, that means you've been properly treated.
After the second week, the treatment will reach its maximum effect. Research on injectable treatments shows they can reduce sweating by 82 to 87 percent in treated areas. In our clinic, we have patients with results that align with this statistic or are better than it. Keep in mind, that results don't last forever.
On average, results last four to six months. However, some Murrells Inlet patients notice reduced results during the summer, while others have more extended periods during those cooler months of fall and winter. We record the data on your appointment, so that when you do return, we can track how long the results last for you and keep up on treatments. If you are unsure whether your results are where they should be?
That's actually pretty common after a first treatment. We will examine your body for any touch-up during that follow-up. Certain areas may not have a strong or immediate reaction to the treatment. In those cases, we make the necessary changes.
If anything about your treatment seems incorrect, call. Don't wait to bring anything up during the next scheduled appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about hyperhidrosis treatment services in Murrells Inlet
Does the humidity in Murrells Inlet make hyperhidrosis harder to treat?
The humidity here does make symptoms worse, but it does not make treatment less effective. Botox injections block the nerve signals that trigger your sweat glands, so outside conditions like coastal heat and thick air do not interfere with results. Most patients near the MarshWalk area see an 80 percent or greater reduction in sweating within one to two weeks. The treatment works the same whether it is July or October.
How long does a hyperhidrosis treatment appointment take in Murrells Inlet?
Your first visit takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. We talk through your symptoms, review your history, and identify your treatment areas. If you are ready to move forward that same day, we can often do the injections right then. The injections themselves take about 15 to 20 minutes for both underarms. You leave with no downtime and go straight back to your normal routine.
How do I know if Botox or Dysport is the right option for my sweating?
Both work by blocking the nerve signals that tell your sweat glands to activate, but some patients respond better to one over the other. We evaluate your situation first and pick the approach that fits your body. You do not have to figure that out on your own. We have both options available and will walk you through the differences before anything is decided.
Can you treat sweaty palms, or is this only for underarms?
We treat palms and foreheads too, not just underarms. Palms can be more sensitive, so we take extra time to explain what to expect before we start that area. The same injection method is used, just adjusted for the specific zone. Many patients from the Burgess and Garden City areas come in specifically for palm treatment because it affects their grip and daily work.
What should I do to prepare for my first hyperhidrosis appointment?
Come in with a clear picture of where you sweat most and how long it has been a problem. Bring a list of any medications you take, since some prescriptions can make sweating worse. You do not need to stop any products beforehand unless we ask you to. Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the areas you want treated. That is really all the prep you need.
How long do hyperhidrosis treatment results last before I need to come back?
Results from Botox injections typically last four to six months. After that, sweating gradually returns and you would schedule another round. Most patients in Murrells Inlet plan two treatments per year to stay ahead of the warmer months. Over time, some people find they need touch-ups less often, though that varies from person to person.
