How to Prepare for Your Enzyme Facial Appointment

This step often seems overwhelming to many clients, but the pre-facial prep is fairly easy. In order to prepare for an enzyme facial, we ask that you avoid any retinol or strong exfoliating treatments about 3 days before your appointment. Since the enzymes work to exfoliate, they will work better on skin that's not sensitive to begin with. The same goes for at-home peels or the use of exfoliating brushes or pads.

Allow the skin to rest, and give it time to heal.

You should also keep a few things in mind the day before and on the day of the appointment. Before your visit:

1. Stop scrubbing with brushes or at-home acids. Give your skin time to rest and calm down.
2. Avoid retinol and acids 2-3 days before your visit. The enzymes provide exfoliation, and it's best to avoid additional stress on the skin.
3. Come with makeup off. We don't mind if you wear a little sunscreen, but we want to keep the time in our treatment room for the enzymes.
4. Drink extra water. Hydrated skin is healthy skin, and healthy skin absorbs the enzymes easier and looks better.
5. Eat a light snack before you arrive. It is a little while to lie down for a treatment, and you may feel faint if your stomach is empty.
6. If you wear contacts, you can leave your case in the car. Most clients prefer to keep their contacts on, but the treatment area is a bit close to their eyes and that can cause irritation to some clients. You choose!
7. Arrive 5 minutes before your appointment so that we can go through your skin's history in more detail.

We do get a few clients that drive over from Garden City, or who are just down the road in the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk, and we do have a few folks who like to stop by the beach on their way to see us. But, regardless of how you're traveling to our salon, you'll be ready with a great, fresh looking complexion in no time.

Step-by-Step: Your Enzyme Facial Experience

You walk in. We get you comfortable. Then, we start the work.

1. Skin Analysis: After analyzing your skin under good light, we ask a few quick questions. What are the products you're using at home? Any breakouts or sensitivity? This process should only take five minutes or so, but it lets us adjust the treatment to your skin type.
2. Cleansing: You get a double cleansing to remove makeup, sunscreen, and oil so your pores can be free and clear for the enzymes.

What to Expect After Your Enzyme Facial

Immediately after your enzyme facial, your skin will be somewhat pinkish. This is to be expected, and the flush usually goes away within an hour or two. The following aftercare instructions are always given to our clients before they leave:

Avoid touching your face for the rest of the day. Do not wear heavy makeup, and do not use heavy-duty products on your face. The skin was just given a deep reset and needs an hour or two to cool back down before you put any kind of stress on it. For the most part, our clients will wake up with brighter skin in the morning and that improved radiance often lasts for several days.

Several of our Inlet Square clients tell us that within 48 hours, they are being asked by friends and coworkers what they are doing differently.

The First 24 Hours

Right after your enzyme facial, your skin is much more receptive. This is a good thing, as that allows your skin to better absorb nourishment, but it is a bad thing if you are applying irritating products or products to which you have some sort of sensitivity. For this reason, we recommend the following:

1. Skip using any serums that contain actives (retinols, vitamin C, acids) for at least 24 hours.
2. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer after your treatment.
3. The next day, apply a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor of 30 or higher.
4. Do not expose your face to direct sunlight, heat, or steam for the next 12 hours. Nor should you exercise or sweat heavily.

We have had clients who have ignored our aftercare instruction to apply a high SPF sun block and end up with uneven skin coloring. Not worth the risk.

Days Two Through Seven

This is the interesting part. Your skin will continue to improve and look better and better for the first several days after your treatment. The dead skin cells that had been loosened by the enzymes will continue to shed naturally in a slow and gentle manner. This is not the same kind of peeling that you experience after a chemical peel, which is more drastic and aggressive.

However, by day four or five, you will notice your pores appear smaller, your skin texture has smoothed out, and the dull skin that you came in with will be completely gone.

Some clients may experience a little skin dryness on day three or so. This is very mild and can be addressed by the use of a more hydrating moisturizer. Clients also frequently tell us that their makeup looks better. Foundation applies smoothly.

Blush and powder are absorbed better. Concealer goes on and blends effortlessly. Because that kind of smooth, makeup-ready canvas is so desirable, we have plenty of clients from near Murrells Inlet who like to schedule their enzyme facial treatment right before a vacation, special event, or a family photo session.
