How Dysport Treatment Works
Dysport treatment works by relaxing particular facial muscles. Unlike fillers, it involves no added volume or plumping. This highly purified protein sends a message to hyperactive muscles to ease up, giving the skin on top room to relax. Here's the mechanism behind the scenes: every time you squint at the ocean or lift your eyebrows, specific muscles flex. Over time, these movements cause wrinkles to form on the skin. Dysport simply breaks the nerve signals that are instructing those muscles to flex. The muscles relax, the skin is smoothed, and the wrinkles soften.

At our office in Murrells Inlet, we often treat certain areas with Dysport. The spots we see most often are:
- Crow's feet at the outer corners of your eyes
- "Eleven" lines between the eyebrows
- Lines from years of raising your eyebrows
- Bunny lines on your nose
Often, people will come in with their finger on the space between their brows or their forehead. They may have noticed the lines they get when they squint at the sun have begun to linger throughout the day. Once they can't be hidden, most patients seek treatment at that point. Dysport is slightly more diffuse, allowing it to cover the forehead effectively for instance. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, neuromodulator products are among the most sought-after non-surgical treatments in the country. The results can be quite subtle if your provider has a keen eye for detail.
No one ever really wants to look frozen. That's something we hear all the time.
Rather, what they really don't want to see is the muscles responsible for making a line that doesn't move anymore. Your face moves, your expressions change, and you look the same. The only difference is the lines are now smoothed out. It's not uncommon for many people that walk in for their first time treatment to be shocked by how subtle it actually was; rather, it is as though their muscles have been allowed to get some rest. Dysport is a repeat treatment. The protein wears over time, and so your body naturally breaks it down, hence the need for more treatment in order to maintain that youthful smooth look.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dysport?
Many of the patients we treat are great candidates for Dysport treatment. However, some results are better than others. Some of the best outcomes come from those who just notice their first few lines starting to form. Those lines on your forehead from years of raising your eyebrows. Those "eleven" lines between your eyebrows that make you look perpetually stressed out. Chances are you're in your mid-30s to early 50s if you've ever been driving along and noticed a wrinkle that's formed a bit deeper when you caught your own eyes in the rearview mirror. Here's what we typically see doing well in our Murrells Inlet clients:
- Adults between late 20's-50's, wanting to stop movement lines from becoming permanent.
- Patients with moderate forehead lines and glabellar lines, who have good skin elasticity.
- Someone who would like to try a different product and has already attempted topicals.
- People wanting a natural treatment.
If you only notice lines when you express a facial emotion, you are an ideal candidate for Dysport, and this is actually the easiest time to treat. Many new clients walk in every week and tell us they "don't think they're bad enough yet" to try an injectable treatment. However, if you treat early on, less product can be used and the result is often even better. Patients who have deep etched in lines can also benefit from treatment, though expectations must be kept realistic. Dysport works by reducing muscle activity, and cannot smooth deep lines that have been set in the skin for many years. Be assured we will be clear with you about expectations during your visit. Do not know if your lines are a candidate for Dysport treatment? Some types of facial wrinkles are not caused by muscle movement but may be a result of sun damage or other factors. If so, we will help guide you on what treatment might work better for your unique situation. We see this difference all of the time. Our licensed team can often make a diagnosis on the proper treatment in as little as 2 minutes! Something we commonly see in our clients who live along the coast is a combination treatment of Dysport and a chemical peel, as the sun is so hard on our skin that our local patients appreciate the dual-treatment of addressing their muscle lines and surface concerns at the same time.
What Should You Expect From a Dysport Treatment?
Most of our Dysport appointments take approximately 30 minutes and you'll be in and out in a flash. Here's what happens.
- We first review your facial features. We watch as you smile, squint, frown, and raise your eyebrows to get an idea of your muscular patterns. That helps us determine precisely where to inject.
- We will cleanse the treatment areas and outline the injection sites on your skin with marker.
- Your injections are then performed rapidly. There will be a few very quick injections with a tiny needle. Patients generally report only a tiny pinch and little-to-no discomfort.
- Your injections are done and then we give you a hand mirror so you can see your injection sites are no longer marked, hand you some at home care instructions, and we're done!
Many of our clients do not even use topical anesthetic, but if you feel like you would prefer to, we offer topical anesthetics as well. If you do elect to have the anesthetic placed, you will need an extra 10 minutes for your appointment, as it requires time to work prior to treatment.
One thing people always ask: "Will I look frozen?" Not if it's done right. The goal is to soften lines while keeping your natural expressions intact. You should still look like you. Just a more rested version.
Dysport spreads a bit more than other injectables. That's actually a good thing for larger areas like the forehead. It means fewer injection points and a smoother result across the muscle. Our injector has years of experience placing units precisely so the spread works in your favor.
You can drive yourself home. You can go grab lunch down by the MarshWalk after. There's zero downtime. Some people get a tiny red bump at the injection site that fades within an hour. Skip the gym for the rest of the day and don't lie flat for about four hours. That's really it.
Wondering if this is right for your specific concerns? Give us a call and we'll talk through it.
How Dysport's Faster Onset Works for Event Planning
You've got a wedding at Wachesaw Plantation in three weeks. Or a reunion down at the MarshWalk. And you want to look refreshed, not frozen. This is the exact conversation we have almost every week here in Murrells Inlet.

Dysport starts showing visible results in about two to three days for most people. That's noticeably quicker than other neuromodulators on the market. The smaller protein molecules spread more easily once injected, so the product gets to work faster across the treated area. For someone planning around a specific date, those extra days matter.
Here's how we typically map it out for event planning:
- Book your Dysport appointment at least two weeks before your event. This gives us a cushion.
- Come in for your appointment. The actual injections take about ten to fifteen minutes.
- Expect early smoothing within 48 to 72 hours.
- Full results settle in around day seven to ten.
- If needed, a quick touch-up at the two-week mark locks everything in.
We see this play out all the time with brides, mothers of the bride, and folks who have a big vacation coming up. Nine times out of ten they're relieved at how simple the timeline is.
But here's what catches people off guard. You can't wait until the last minute and expect perfect results. If you come in three days before your event, we can still treat you, the onset is fast enough. You just won't have time for any fine-tuning. That two-week window is the sweet spot.
The faster onset also means less of that anxious waiting period where you're staring in the mirror wondering if anything happened. Our Murrells Inlet patients often see changes before their next scheduled appointment.
Can't decide on the best time for your appointment? Give us a call and we'll help you figure it out.
If you have a special event coming up in early fall, summer appointments will last through the season and cover you. We frequently assist our patients with planning for major occasions, such as holidays, photoshoots, or high school reunions. Whatever's on your schedule, simply let us know the date and we'll work backward to create a plan just for you.

Aftercare Procedures
You may be asking yourself, "what steps do I take for after Dysport treatment?"

We'll review aftercare with you before you leave our office, but we'll give you the honest facts here as well. We see a lot of patients who call our Murrells Inlet offices because they have concerns over uneven results and unexpected bruising. This almost always comes down to them neglecting one of these basic aftercare tips for Dysport. And that is not their fault, as they simply forget to follow through once they are home caring for their children and running errands.
To help you follow these essential rules, we created an easy-to-read "check list" for Dysport aftercare:
- You must stay upright for at least 4 hours after treatment (no face-down naps or bending over to water plants).
- Avoid touching or rubbing the injection site, as this may seem obvious, but it's hard to resist once you're home and tempted to check the treatment site.
- Take the day off from the gym after your treatment (increased blood flow can move the product away from the area intended).
- No alcohol for 24 hours - alcohol thins the blood, making it more likely you will have unwanted bruises.
- Avoid any type of heat for the first 48 hours (this includes steamy hot showers as well as the gym saunas and hot tubs.)
When patients stick to these 5 rules, 9 out of 10 times, we get much smoother, more even, and faster-appearing results! We also remind patients who have spent the day at the beach that the sun itself, especially in South Carolina, can cause swelling and redness that has nothing to do with the injection or the treatment. It's just sunburn. So, wear a hat if you're outside, and put on at least 30 SPF sunscreen. Keep it simple.
One final, surprising piece of aftercare that is actually encouraged: exercise the area! Yes, it's true! You can actually work the treated muscles - raise your forehead up, frown on purpose, whatever you were concerned about before getting Dysport, just do it again, and that will help the results appear faster. There are no special creams to purchase for recovery, and no need to buy anything extra at all. Just take it easy, follow the aftercare tips listed above and most of our Murrells Inlet patients resume their daily routines the very next day. Of course, they see the results in 5 to 7 days, but otherwise it's business as usual.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about dysport treatment services in Murrells Inlet
How long does it take to see results from Dysport in Murrells Inlet?
Most people in Murrells Inlet start seeing results within two to three days after treatment. Full results usually show up by day five to seven. Dysport tends to kick in a little faster than some other neuromodulators. That faster onset is one reason so many of our local clients prefer it. You'll notice the muscles softening first, then the lines start to smooth out as those muscles stop pulling so hard.
Can I go back to normal activities after my Dysport appointment?
Yes, you can go right back to your day after a Dysport appointment. There is no downtime. You can drive yourself home, grab lunch down by the MarshWalk, or run errands. The only things to skip are the gym for the rest of the day and lying flat for about four hours after treatment. A small red bump at the injection site may appear but fades within an hour.
Does living on the coast near Murrells Inlet affect how long Dysport lasts?
Coastal sun exposure can speed up skin aging, but it does not make Dysport wear off faster. What it does mean is that many Murrells Inlet clients deal with both muscle-driven lines and surface sun damage at the same time. Dysport handles the muscle side. We often pair it with a chemical peel for clients who want to tackle both issues in one plan. Your results from Dysport itself typically last three to four months.
Am I a good candidate for Dysport if my lines only show up when I make an expression?
You are actually an ideal candidate if your lines only appear during expressions. That is the easiest stage to treat and the one where Dysport works best. Waiting until lines sit on your face all day, even at rest, means they are harder to smooth out completely. We see clients every week who think they are not ready yet. Treating early usually means using less product and getting a cleaner result.
Will I look frozen or unnatural after Dysport treatment?
You will not look frozen if the treatment is done correctly. The goal is to soften the muscles that cause deep creasing, not to stop your face from moving. You will still smile, squint, and make expressions. You will still look like yourself. Most first-time clients are surprised at how subtle the change feels. It is more like your face looks well-rested than like anything was done to it.
How do I prepare for my first Dysport appointment?
There is not much you need to do before your first Dysport visit. Come in with a clean face if you can. Avoid blood thinners like aspirin or ibuprofen for a few days before if your doctor allows it, since that can reduce bruising. No numbing cream is needed for most people, but if needles make you nervous, just let us know when you call. We can apply a topical numbing agent that only adds about ten minutes to your appointment.
