Understanding Botox: What It Does and What It Doesn't
Botox injections function by relaxing particular facial muscles. The drug acts to block the nerve signals that stimulate muscle contraction and limit its power to contract when a muscle is no longer moving or wrinkling, the skin covering becomes smoother. Creases are reduced and fine lines start to disappear.
This is what we tell every patient at our Murrells Inlet, SC Botox injections appointments when we discuss it in our consultation with them: that Botox should not freeze your face. Never. The right dose gives you the natural appearance you deserve. You'll be able to smile and laugh and move as you always did; you just won't develop deeper and deeper lines. We work very hard to make sure you can continue to move without deepening the creases your face develops with those facial expressions.
Many patients at our Murrells Inlet, SC Botox injections appointments come to our office with a limited understanding of what Botox can do for them and what it cannot do. For example, Botox works best for so-called dynamic wrinkles, the ones that get etched into your skin from the same facial muscle movement time after time:
- Horizontal lines across your forehead created by raising your eyebrows;
- The lines that develop around your eyes (crow's feet).
- The "eleven lines" that develop between your eyebrows, caused by frowning.
- The "bunny lines" at the base of your nose.
These wrinkles tend to be the reason people get Botox. And they tend to see excellent results from Botox injections at a Murrells Inlet clinic like ours. You'll start to see results in three to five days. You'll see the full results after about two weeks.
Botox isn't the answer to everything. You need to look at your other treatment options if your problem is that your face is losing volume. Botox is a great choice for the crow's feet and brow lines, but if your face is deflating from below, if your cheeks are hollow, if there's a shadow in your under-eye area, fillers may be a better choice. If your problem is loose, sagging skin at the jaw, that may also require different treatment, something that tightens the skin, not something that relaxes muscle movement. At our clinic, we want to treat your condition appropriately so you don't walk out from our office disappointed.
We also field many questions from patients about sweating, can Botox help you deal with excessive perspiration? It can! The American Academy of Dermatology lists Botox as a treatment for hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating. And we offer it here as well.
Botox relaxes muscles. It helps get rid of facial lines. But Botox doesn't replace volume. It doesn't tighten skin. It doesn't make you look frozen. We want to make sure the only thing anyone remarks when they see you is "Wow, you look great."
How Do I Know If I'm a Botox Candidate?
Most people that walk into our Murrells Inlet office are good candidates for Botox injections. Some are not. And that's fine.
The best way for you to determine whether Botox is right for you is to come in and have a consultation with our team. We'll look over the skin, talk through your concerns and goals, and review your health history. It's a very personal meeting, no pressure sales pitch here.
You're most likely to be a great candidate for Botox if you have:
- Lines on your forehead even at rest,
- Skin around your eyes, so called as "crow's feet", that looks undesirable in photographs
- Horizontal furrows between your eyes or vertically "glabella" lines or "11s" that can give you a tired or frowning look
- Hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating that has not responded to other therapies
- A desire to prevent more permanent, deeper lines from forming on their own
We see many people in their late twenties come in to prevent these deeper wrinkles from occurring, and we see a lot of clients in their sixties come in to soften lines they've had for years. No matter what your age, both of our clients' treatments are highly successful.
Are you unsure whether your concern is the right one to be treated with Botox injections? That is also very common. Often patients will come to see us expecting to have filler, when in fact they will benefit from Botox or vice versa. We can tell almost instantly in a consultation if your concerns can be resolved with a Botox injection.
There are situations in which we recommend that patients wait to have Botox injections. For example, patients who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding cannot have Botox. We also do not inject patients with certain neuromuscular disorders. And if you are currently treating a skin infection near the area of injection, we will ask you to wait to have your treatment until the infection is resolved. The point of seeing a licensed medical provider is to make sure you are getting the safest possible treatment.
One of the things we hear a lot around the Inlet Square area is when a patient thinks their concern is so bad that Botox can't help them. We've had many patients come in, very unhappy with a certain skin concern, only to find they could resolve the issue with Botox. If you are wondering whether you should have Botox, a consultation takes no more than a few minutes at Jolie Visage. We look forward to hearing from you and are happy to help you determine what you need.
Botox Injection Before Appointment Instructions
While most of the outcome of your Botox procedure will be affected by what goes on in the treatment room, there are a few things we recommend that you do in the days before your treatment.
If you make an appointment to see us in Murrells Inlet, we have some things we want you to be sure to do before your appointment.
- Avoid all blood thinners for seven days before your appointment. That includes aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil/vitamin E, because these increase the chances for bruising, and prescription blood thinners should be discussed with a physician to safe treatment.
- Avoid all alcohol for forty-eight hours before your appointment. That includes wine, cocktails, and beer, all of which thin the blood just enough to increase bruising at the injection site.
- Make sure you are not wearing makeup at your appointment. While we will cleanse the treatment area before treatment, it's faster and more precise if the skin is not covered with makeup, heavy moisturizer, or sunblock.
- Eat a light meal a few hours before your appointment. Don't come in on an empty stomach, as a light meal will make you feel steadier and more comfortable during your appointment.
- Write down your medications and supplements. If you're currently taking any medication (whether prescription or OTC), we ask that you provide us with the information so that you are safe for treatment and can avoid any negative interactions. If you'd like, just make a list for us, which will help to that no medications are forgotten.
It's a mistake we encounter on a near-daily basis. A client might stop their aspirin but continue with their daily fish oil, then ask why a small bruise has formed right next to their crow's feet. Also, tell us in advance if you've had any kind of dental work done, or if you have any future appointments scheduled. There are various dental procedures that may influence the scheduling of your Botox session. Same goes for any recent facial treatments, such as chemical peels or microneedling. Our goal is for your skin to be as settled and calm as possible before injecting. If you're uncertain if any medications you take might be a problem, please call us to ask before your session. Better to field your questions on the phone rather than discover them on your appointment day. Another thing: If you're making the trip down from Burgess or any location on Highway 17, we recommend allowing a few extra minutes to get here. Rushing in stressed won't ruin your results, but being relaxed makes the whole experience better.

The Journey to your Jolie Visage Botox Treatment
So often, our clients put off scheduling because they do not know what to expect. Well, here is what is going to happen once you walk in the door.
- Check-in. You'll complete a brief health history. We need to be made aware of medications you're taking, your allergies and any previous cosmetic treatment you may have had done. Should take 5 minutes.
- In-person consultation. We'll sit and chat and look at your face as you smile and talk. It helps us identify which muscles are doing most of the work. We ask what's bothering you, and point out what we observe. Sometimes it's not quite the same thing.
- Marking and mapping. Your injector will place a few small dots using a pen that can easily be wiped away. These points will be used to guide the injections. The dots are based on your specific anatomical features, so we're not following the same blueprint for all of our clients; everyone's face is unique and requires a different approach.
- The Injections. We deliver a small dose of Botox using a needle, to each point. We use a very fine needle and most of our clients say it's like a tiny pin prick. The whole process usually takes about 10-15 minutes to treat a particular facial area.
- Aftercare discussion. We'll cover the do's and don'ts for the next several hours. No lying on your face, no exercise and no massaging or rubbing the injections.
And then you walk back out, and you're good. Many of our Murrells Inlet customers make their visits between work or while they do their running around downtown Murrells Inlet near the Marshwalk. It doesn't require a lot of time off work, and you can return back to your regular day right away. You might see some tiny spots where your injections were performed, but these will disappear very fast. The one thing we advise all our new customers about: Botox does not produce its effects immediately. You will not notice your results right away; they typically begin to emerge after about 3-4 days. Full results will become more apparent closer to the two-week mark. If you appear identical while driving home, do not stress. This is completely normal. Our injectors are licensed and have invested years into mastering facial muscle and anatomical function. That knowledge is the single most important element. We look at you in motion, seeing how your muscles are moving, and make necessary adjustments in the moment. Interested in learning more about just how easy the procedure truly is? Give us a call. We are happy to walk you through the whole process.
Results, Aftercare, And the 2-Week Follow-Up
We do not walk our clients out the door looking any different. In fact, that is the goal of the entire experience.
Botox does not take effect overnight. It typically starts showing changes around days three or four. Full results are not usually seen until ten or fourteen days later. The forehead smooths out first, followed by the crow's feet. I have to say to every single client I treat in Murrells Inlet, give it time! We all tend to want instant gratification. The best outcomes usually go to those clients who do not examine their face in the mirror obsessively all day.
Aftercare is simple and easy, yet it is so ! We ask our clients to follow these recommendations for the first 24 hours post treatment:
- Remain upright for at least 4 hours after your appointment
- Do not workout, attend hot yoga classes or anything that spikes your heart rate
- Do not rub or massage the treated areas
- Avoid alcohol consumption and/or medications that thin the blood if possible
Our clients return to work as normal. They can pick up their children and run errands. Many of my patients near Inlet Square come in for their appointments during their lunch and no one is the wiser.
People frequently skip the follow-up and I really wish they would not. The two-week follow-up is when we look back at how your muscles reacted to the neurotoxin. Everyone's face is different. One side can be more relaxed than the other side. Very slight touch-ups at the two-week visit can improve asymmetry. I often make small tweaks at the follow-up visits that elevate a good experience to a great one.
What About Worries or Side Effects?
A mild headache during the first day is normal. There may be slight bruising in an injection site. Both are expected outcomes. Should you experience anything that is not within the "expected " call us. Do not try to diagnose yourself by Googling at home. I would rather receive your call for a little thing than have you sitting at home fretting or worrying for a week.
What some clients do not realize is that their outcomes will look even better with the second and third treatments. Their muscles will be accustomed to being relaxed and the wrinkles will soften. Treatment one, as you can see, is not the last one. Many of our long-term clients here in Murrells Inlet come in every three to four months and build upon the last visit with each one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about botox injections services in Murrells Inlet
How long do Botox results last in Murrells Inlet's humid coastal climate?
Most people in Murrells Inlet see results last three to four months. The coastal humidity here doesn't affect how long Botox works — that's determined by your metabolism and how active those muscles are. What can shorten results is sun exposure, which we get plenty of near the Inlet. Wearing SPF daily and avoiding excessive heat helps you get the most out of every treatment. Regular appointments keep results consistent over time.
Does Botox actually hurt?
Most people describe Botox injections as a quick pinch — not painful, just noticeable for a second. The needles used are very fine, and the whole treatment takes about 15 minutes. We can apply a numbing cream beforehand if you're sensitive. Most clients are surprised by how easy it is. You can walk out and go right back to your normal day with no downtime needed.
How soon will I see results after my Botox appointment?
You'll start noticing changes within three to five days after your Botox injections. Full results show up around the two-week mark. That's when the muscles have fully relaxed and the skin above them has smoothed out. We always recommend scheduling a quick follow-up around that two-week point so we can check your results and make any small adjustments if needed.
Can Botox help with sweating, not just wrinkles?
Yes — Botox is FDA-approved to treat excessive sweating, also called hyperhidrosis. We offer this treatment right here in Murrells Inlet. It works the same way as wrinkle treatment: by blocking the nerve signals that trigger sweat glands. For people who struggle with sweating through the hot, humid summers along the Inlet, this can be a real relief. Results typically last four to six months.
What should I avoid after getting Botox injections?
For the first 24 hours after Botox, skip hard workouts, don't lie flat, and avoid rubbing the treated area. Heat is a big one — stay out of saunas, hot tubs, and direct sun. These things can cause the product to migrate before it settles. After that first day, you're good to go back to normal. We'll go over all of this with you before you leave the office.
Am I too young — or too old — for Botox injections?
Age matters less than most people think. We treat clients in their late twenties who want to prevent deep lines from forming. We also treat clients in their sixties who want to soften lines they've had for years. Both get real results. If you have lines that bother you — whether they're just starting or well established — a quick consultation will tell you exactly what Botox can do for you.
