What Body Composition Analysis Actually Measures
Stepping on a scale doesn't reveal the whole picture; it is far from the full story.

Body composition analysis measures more than weight; it identifies the specific components within you such as lean muscle, body fat, and water. Unlike a regular scale, which provides a singular number leaving much to guesswork, we can see when someone has lost fat and gained muscle, even if the scale shows no change. We see these frustrated clients at our Murrells Inlet office who wonder why the number isn't moving, despite positive body composition changes.
Body composition analysis can measure:
- Body fat percentage, the percentage of your fat relative to body weight.
- Lean muscle mass, anything that isn't fat including muscle, bone and organs.
- Visceral fat, visceral fat that surrounds the organs and is a major predictor of disease.
- Body water, hydration levels within the various compartments of the body.
- Basal metabolic rate, how many calories you burn on average at rest.
Knowing your BMR (Basal metabolic rate) is one of the most important factors in your journey. You could have been stuck on a plateau and never known what was going on in your body without this data.
The other data point that can make the most difference between good health and poor health is Visceral fat. You cannot tell your body composition by your eyes. Two people could be the same height and weight. However, one may be at low risk while the other is at high risk for cardiovascular disease because the person has a high level of visceral fat.
Body fat percentage is a much better indicator of health risk than BMI alone, according to the American Council on Exercise. We see this daily in our Murrells Inlet chiropractic office. BMI is not accurate in measuring the difference between a person with a high muscle mass and a high BMI and someone who may carry excess body fat and a high BMI as well. That is a lot of bad information.
This baseline allows us to start right where you are. Not to estimate. Not to hope. But to have a measurable data point for you to come back for each visit.
Body composition analysis supports our Murrells Inlet weight loss program at Jolie Visage, giving you a clearer picture than the scale alone.
Why BMI Alone Misses the Full Picture
You get weighed. You put your height and weight on a calculator. It gives you a number and the assumption is you have the whole picture?
You don't.
The BMI, developed by a Belgian scientist in 1830 was intended for use as a large-scale screening tool, not as a personal health guide. According to the National Institutes of Health, the BMI can't distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. In fact, a person with 30 pounds of lean mass will have the same BMI score as someone with 30 pounds of body fat. That's a discrepancy we see almost weekly at our Murrells Inlet location, often in folks who train diligently but feel they've stalled.
The BMI does not account for: The ratio of body fat to lean mass; how and where you're storing fat; whether you're losing lean mass or fat during a weight loss program; and your base metabolic rate. The body composition analysis fills in the blanks for BMI because it gives you a true picture of your fat mass, muscle mass, water, and body density. You can't make the same assumptions when you look at someone's BMI, and it can help you understand that "overweight" and "normal" BMI designations. Our client came to us with the same frustration.
Her BMI told her she was normal and her doctor said she was, but she didn't feel normal. Her body composition told us she had low muscle mass and high visceral fat. That's just one of the many important indicators your BMI can't capture. If you're aiming for medical weight loss or just feeling stronger, you need to know whether you're losing body fat or muscle mass when the scale goes down, but only body composition analysis reveals that.
No guessing here; you need data.
How to Prepare for a Body Composition Test
Most people overthink the prep for body composition analysis. The prep is actually straightforward, but there are a few things you can do to more accurate results. At Murrells Inlet Body Composition, we tell clients this before they come in for a body composition test. Follow these steps so your numbers reflect your true results:

- Drink plenty of water throughout the day before your test, but don't drink much for a couple hours prior. The analysis relies on hydration levels. Too much or too little water will skew results.
- Don't have a meal 3-4 hours prior to your test (light snacks are fine).
- No workout that morning. Exercising causes fluid shifts that affect the way the analysis reads your muscle and fat mass.
- Wear light clothes. Shorts and a t-shirt work fine. Leave the jeans and boots at home.
- Skip alcohol for a day before. You're likely more hydrated now after the weekend than you were a few weeks ago, and that will affect your results.
Every week or so, I'll walk in and catch someone after a run on the Marshwalk, all sweaty. I have to tell them that the fluid shifts from the recent exercise will change the analysis by 2 to 3 percent in body fat levels. Not because anything really changed, it was simply a matter of timing. If you are on medications, do not stop taking them.
Please just let us know what medication you take so we can take that into account. Diuretics and blood pressure medications change hydration levels, which may impact the results. Body composition analysis is intended to track change over time. Consistency is key and if possible try to be evaluated at about the same time of day each time.
For the most accurate readings, we recommend scheduling your body composition evaluation at the same time each month preferably in the morning when hydration levels are more consistent from day to day. If you have any questions prior to your visit, please feel free to give us a call. The last thing we want is for you to have doubts about your result. We would rather spend a few minutes on the phone ahead of time than be guessing at home or even worse when it comes time for the next body composition evaluation.
For patients undergoing blood work for weight loss or our medical weight loss program, we can often accommodate the evaluation and the blood draw for your convenience. Our goal is to understand where you are now and what you are hoping to accomplish.

What Happens During and After Your Appointment at Jolie Visage
You arrive and we begin to get to know one another.
Before we ever take your body composition analysis we take the time to discuss your personal medical history, lifestyle habits and personal goals. Whether you are hoping to lose 30 pounds or feel like you do not have a good reason to lose weight, we are happy to see and help you regardless of your goal. Both stories are common to us each week here in Murrells Inlet.
The Scan
The body composition analysis evaluation itself is very straightforward. Most of our patients are surprised by how simple it is. During this portion of the visit we will:
- take your baseline measurements and discuss your weight
- place you on the body composition machine for approximately 30 seconds
- the body composition analysis will then be performed, showing your body composition fat mass, lean mass and water
- we then print out your results and sit back down together
There is no needles or fasting but we do recommend being properly hydrated and avoiding a heavy meal prior to your visit. This entire process is shorter than getting a cup of coffee.
Reviewing Your Results
The last portion of the visit is often the most important. We review and discuss your personal results. The results are meaningless if you do not understand the significance of the information for you specifically.
We go over the information on the results page. This means discussing visceral fat levels, muscle imbalances, your metabolic rate, and anything else of importance. We let you know which things you need to address and those that are okay. Often we find our patients are not as muscular as they thought.
This alone often reveals itself as the culprit when it comes to weight loss challenges.
And if your results indicate that you would benefit from support, we can automatically integrate your body composition analysis with our medical weight loss program, semaglutide weight loss or nutrition counseling, all under one roof.
However, we do not simply scan your body, give you a printout of your results, wish you well, and see you on your way. In other words, we'll be sure to answer any questions that you may have before you leave. Wondering if you'll want to return in four weeks vs. eight weeks? We'll help you determine that based on your body composition analysis.

Using Your Body Composition Analysis to Measure Real Progress Over Time
This is where body composition analysis really shines.

One scan will tell you how you currently stand. A second scan can completely transform your perspective. By scheduling future body composition analysis at set intervals, we can track actual changes that are taking place. No assumptions.
No wonder what size jeans you currently fit into. Actual measurements that reveal your rate of fat loss, muscle gain, and water retention change, none of which would show on a bathroom scale.
Many of our clients who return to our Murrells Inlet location for a body composition analysis re-check are nervous. They've been exercising and eating better (or they're on semaglutide weight loss therapy or getting lipotropic injections, for that matter). They want validation. They often find, however, that the data reveals progress that the mirror hasn't caught up to yet.
This is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work.
What We Compare Between Scans
- Change in your percentage of body fat as compared to lean muscle mass
- Changes in visceral fat around the organs
- Hydration levels and the role they play in body composition analysis
- Trends of whether your metabolism is going up or down
We present you with each metric side by side so that you can spot trends. Perhaps you've dropped four pounds of body fat, but gained two pounds of muscle. A bathroom scale would only register two pounds of weight lost, which may be discouraging. Body composition analysis tells you the whole story.
Additionally, if body composition analysis isn't delivering the anticipated results, that in itself is highly helpful. At that point, we may decide to revise your medical weight loss plan, update your nutrition counseling, or even consider whether hormone therapy may be necessary. You won't have to endure months of wondering why your efforts aren't producing results.
We'll keep your body composition analysis on file, so that every follow-up scan builds on the last one. Over the next six months or so, you will be able to look back on a full timeline of where your body has been and how far you've come. Many of our clients tell us on a consistent basis that reviewing their body composition analysis and how their numbers improve over time is what helps to keep them going when willpower isn't enough. That sort of accountability is powerful; it can mean the difference between giving up at month two and getting the results you want for the long term.
Wondering what kind of progress you're making right now? Give us a call and we'll get your body composition baseline documented.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about body composition analysis services in Murrells Inlet
What should I do to prepare for a body composition analysis appointment?
Stop drinking water about two hours before your visit and skip your workout that morning. Exercise shifts fluid in your body and can swing your numbers by two or three percentage points. Wear lightweight clothes like gym shorts and a t-shirt. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your test. Try to book a morning appointment here in Murrells Inlet for the most stable, consistent readings each time.
How is body composition analysis different from just using a BMI calculator?
Body composition analysis shows you exactly how much of your weight is fat, muscle, and water. BMI can't do that. A person carrying 30 pounds of lean muscle and a person carrying 30 pounds of fat can get the exact same BMI score. That's not useful. Body composition analysis catches hidden risks like high visceral fat around your organs, low muscle mass, and a slow metabolism that BMI completely misses.
Can body composition analysis explain why the scale isn't moving even when I'm doing everything right?
Yes, and this is one of the most common things we see in our Murrells Inlet office. The scale gives you one number. Body composition analysis breaks that number apart. Many people who feel stuck have actually lost fat and gained muscle at the same time. The scale stays flat, but your body is changing in the right direction. Seeing that data makes a huge difference for staying motivated and adjusting your plan.
What is visceral fat and why does it matter more than what I see in the mirror?
Visceral fat is the fat stored around your organs, not under your skin. You can't see it or feel it. Two people in Murrells Inlet could weigh the same, wear the same size clothes, and have completely different visceral fat levels. One might be low risk. The other could be heading toward serious metabolic problems. Body composition analysis measures visceral fat directly so you know your real health picture, not just what the mirror shows.
How often should I get a body composition analysis to track my progress?
Most people get the best results by testing every four to six weeks. That gives your body enough time to show real changes in fat mass and muscle mass. Coming in too often can make small normal fluctuations look like big shifts. Try to schedule each visit at roughly the same time of day for the most accurate comparison. Consistency in timing matters just as much as consistency in your health habits.
Does sweating a lot in Murrells Inlet's heat and humidity affect my body composition results?
It absolutely can. Coming in right after a walk along the Marshwalk or any outdoor activity in the heat can shift your fluid levels enough to change your body fat reading by two or three percentage points. That doesn't mean anything in your body actually changed. It just means the timing threw off the test. We recommend avoiding heavy activity and direct sun exposure for at least a few hours before your appointment.
