Tips on what is involved in Teen Facials
A teen facial isn't simply a smaller adult one. The teen facial is really geared towards younger, developing, and usually oil-prone skin.

We start every session with a close look at your teen's skin. Not a glance. A real evaluation under good light so we can see what's happening beneath the surface.
A teen facial is one of the esthetics and facial services at Jolie Visage in Murrells Inlet. If you are considering more than one treatment, we will help you build a plan that fits your goals.
The Teen Facial Step-by-Step
Here is the routine that we typically follow for the facial we provide at our Murrells Inlet location:
- We gently clean your teen's skin to wash off any debris, sunscreen and pollution that may be present.
- We then steam their skin to soften the skin for extractions and to open up their pores.
- We perform extractions if they are necessary. Teen skin is quite delicate so we take our time when dealing with extractions on their skin to avoid any further skin damage.
- A light pore cleansing mask is used for their specific skin type.
- We finish the facial with a hydrating serum or moisturizer and SPF. Sun protection should be a big priority especially while we live near the coast.
During teen facials we never use harsh acids, aggressive peels or other things that may cause redness for days on the skin. Many people in the Garden City area come for a teen facial at our spa expecting something intense. However, what we find with our teen clients is that they are quite surprised and pleased with how soothing their facials were.
We work on extractions with every facial, which is what our teen facials at the center focus on the most.
Teenage boys or girls are often known to pick at their skin and to pop things they probably shouldn't, and that often results in scarring, acne, or other problems that can lead to dark spots or infection. Our trained and licensed estheticians are happy to properly extract the things that need to be extracted so that your kids don't have to do it themselves. We also teach teens what is okay to leave alone at home and that educational piece is an extremely important part of any facial.
Our facials for teen clients are certainly more intensive than what they can do themselves with a drugstore face wash, but that really is the point. Your teen is receiving the care of someone who has the trained eye and hand to see those potential problems before it gets any worse. We are able to spot trouble skin in the earliest stages to save any trouble in the future.
A Coastal Location Influences Skin Conditions
The beach changes your skin. It may not be the first thing people think of when they move near the water, but it is something that we can see and prove in our treatment room on a daily basis.
Murrells Inlet is right near the beach, and we have salt in the air, humidity, and more sun for most of the year. Teen skin is struggling as it is with hormonal changes, increased oil production and easier clogging of pores even within the last six months. The environmental elements on top of those things only exacerbate breakouts that the average drugstore treatment wouldn't even touch.
That's what salt air is doing to teen skin, as it strips moisture from the top, then seals oil inside. Your skin is both dry and oily, and your teen washes their face three times a day to 'fix' it, and that strips the skin barrier even more. And here is what happens next.
A teen facial helps break the cycle. We analyze what coastal life is doing to their skin, and then we customize the treatment. Some Murrells Inlet teens live outside on the weekends. Some play sports in full sun.
We don't treat everyone the same, because each teen has a different exposure pattern. Here's some common things we see on coastal teen skin:
- Dehydration looks like oiliness on the forehead and nose.
- Salt crystals stuck in the pores cause blackheads along the jawline.
- Sun damage creates texture, before you notice discoloration.
- Humidity followed by air conditioning irritates the skin all day.
About 85 percent of American teens get acne sometime in their teenage years, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. But acne in different climates affects each teen in different ways. What works for an acne treatment for your teen living in a dry city won't work here. That's why a teen facial done by a professional in Murrells Inlet is so important, so you don't have to guess at random skincare products.
We have treated skin in Murrells Inlet for years, and what the climate does to skin. Teens don't need a cookie-cutter answer, and they need someone to know what salt air does to teen skin.
Teen Facials Are for Boys Too
Boys make up about half of the teen clients in our Murrells Inlet spa. Many parents find this to be a bit of a surprise. Boys have just as much oil, and the same clogged pores and breakouts as teens do. Puberty hits teens, they go into overdrive with oil production.
Boys don't have much experience with face wash, or what products to use. They come into our spa with skin irritated by scrubbing too hard, or they use whatever bar soap is in the shower. A teen facial is a fresh start for boys, and gives them a routine they can actually follow.

What do we treat during a boy's facial?
- Too much oil on the nose, chin and forehead.
- Blackheads from sweat or sports gear.
- Razor bumps or irritation from new shaving.
- Breakouts along the hairline and temple after a sports game or workout session.
Think about the routine: your son sits in hot cars, works up a serious sweat outside, then spends twenty minutes just riding in the backseat of the car on the way home, and by the time he even thinks about washing his face, the pores are already plugged up. Then there's that whole part where guys don't ever want to bring anything like that up with anyone.
We keep it super simple so it's not weird. A fresh, clean space, a quick talk about skin troubles, and we're done. The response is almost always: "I didn't know I needed this, but when can I come back?"
Teen boys get the same kind of teen facial as we do for teen girls: deep cleaning, extractions as necessary, and a soothing finish. We just tailor the approach. Boys tend to have thicker skin that can handle a bit more during the extraction phase. And that's it.
The main thing that parents in Murrells Inlet say they've seen is confidence change after one visit. Clear skin is important to teen guys, but they're less likely to come out and say so.

What to Expect Before, During, and After the Appointment
Most teens we see are a bit nervous the first time. We'll take a few moments and talk through every step before touching their skin.
Typically this is how it'll go:
- Initial skin exam. We'll evaluate what's happening on the skin's surface and inquire about a normal day's skin-care routine. Are you washing? Are you using a drugstore cleanser, which is making the problem worse? We want to know everything.
- Initial cleansing and prepping We'll begin with a gentle wash to remove oil, sunscreen, or whatever else has accumulated. Even by the time we get through this step, most teens will be like: "Wait, I can feel the difference already?"
- Steam, extract. We'll use steam to plump out the pores, and then we can get the dirt out in a safe manner. This is where kids will usually get antsy, and we don't rush them. If it's too deep to see it or we sense inflammation, we leave it. We can't risk scarring from going too far.
- The treatment mask. We apply a mask suited to the skin issues the patient has. An oily and congested face has different issues than dry and irritated skin.
- Application of moisturizer and sunscreen. Finish it off with an ultra-light moisturizer and sun protection. Nothing that feels heavy or greasy, nothing that's going to clog pores.
Our entire teenage facial takes about 30-45 minutes. There is no recovery time. You can jump back in your school backpack and run out. Teenagers will generally have more clear, calm, non-red skin almost immediately following the procedure.
We typically see some very minor irritation around the extraction areas, and this should be gone within a few hours.
Of course! We'll let parents know that it's ok to see a little redness after pickup.
Don't pick at their face tonight; we've done the work for them. Picking will only set you back and may cause long-term scarring to your teen's face.
We give them simple instructions on what to use and what to stay away from until their next appointment. We don't teach a teen a complicated ten-step routine; we simply provide what we feel is necessary for a young person's face. Our licensed estheticians know that if it gets too complicated, a teen will stop listening.
When and How Often Should a Teen Get a Facial?
It's the most common question we get from parents; "How often should my teen get a facial?" The correct answer is, "it depends."

In general, an average teen with an oily complexion and minor to moderate breakouts should have a teen facial every 4-6 weeks. That is about right for the length of time it takes for your skin to renew itself. Within that amount of time, there will be an accumulation of dead skin cells at the top layer and oil production will have increased. If we wait longer than 6 weeks, the skin becomes more difficult to work with and we have to treat the skin that you are currently having, rather than prevent issues.
We see this time and time again. A teen comes in who has congested skin. We work on their skin to clear it up. They go home and don't return for 3 months!
Now we start over.
So, how young should a teen get a facial? There is no set answer because every teen is different. Some start getting facials at age 12-13, some start at age 10 and others wait until 15 years old. Signs that your teen's skin may need a facial are:
- The nose and chin area have blackheads that are not clearing up
- They get repeated breakouts in the same areas of the face
- Their skin looks tired, rough and/or is lacking brightness
- Your teen is picking at their face out of frustration
Our goal is to create a personalized plan for each client in order to treat their skin effectively. If a person sticks to a regular facial schedule, their skin will have noticeable improvement. Their skin calms faster. They need less extractions to clear their breakouts because skin congestion doesn't become worse.
And they learn how to take proper care of their skin at home from the information we provide each time they come in.
Families living near Inlet Square usually book their teens during school breaks, early release days, etc... This keeps up with their schedule and makes a teen's consistency with appointments easier. Also, the weather is humid during the summer in the Murrells Inlet area and dry in the winter months so keeping that in mind while maintaining a facial schedule is very important to get the best results for skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about teen facial services in Murrells Inlet
What should my teen do to prepare for their first facial appointment?
Your teen should come in with a clean face and skip any new skincare products for a day or two before the visit. If they wear makeup, that's fine — we cleanse everything off at the start. Let us know about any medications they're taking, especially acne prescriptions. Accutane and certain topicals change how we approach the treatment. The more honest you are upfront, the better the results.
How often should teens in Murrells Inlet get a facial?
Most teens in Murrells Inlet do well with a facial every four to six weeks. The coastal humidity and salt air speed up pore clogging, so regular appointments help stay ahead of breakouts. If your teen is active outside or plays sports, more frequent visits may help. We'll tell you after the first session what schedule makes the most sense for their skin. There's no one-size-fits-all answer here.
Will extractions make my teen's skin worse or cause scarring?
Done correctly by a licensed esthetician, extractions do not cause scarring. The problem happens when teens pick or pop at home without proper technique. We use the right pressure, the right tools, and we only extract what's ready. Forcing a pore that isn't ready causes damage. We also teach your teen what to leave alone between visits so they're not undoing the work at home.
Is a teen facial different for boys than it is for girls?
The core treatment is the same, but we adjust based on skin thickness and oil levels. Teen boys typically produce more oil and have thicker skin, so we can go a little deeper during the extraction phase. We also address razor irritation and post-workout breakouts that are common with guys. The appointment is straightforward and low-key — most boys walk out asking when they can come back.
What happens after the facial — is there any downtime?
Most teens leave looking calm and clear with zero downtime. If we did extractions, there may be slight redness in those spots for a few hours. That fades quickly. We finish every session with hydration and SPF, so your teen is good to go. We do ask them to skip heavy workouts and avoid touching their face for the rest of the day. Simple aftercare makes a big difference in how long the results last.
Where is parking available for your Murrells Inlet location?
Parking is easy and stress-free at our Murrells Inlet location. There is dedicated parking right outside the building, so you won't need to walk far or worry about meters. If you're coming during a busy weekend near the waterfront, give yourself an extra few minutes. We recommend arriving five to ten minutes early so your teen can fill out their intake form before the appointment starts.
