Living at the Shore Makes Your Skin Struggle
Your skin hates the salt air. Most who live by the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk don't think about how the sea makes it tough on them.

We see it all the time. Someone walks in and is convinced they just have a dry patch or new acne. It's usually a set of issues unique to the shoreline. Humidity makes pores bigger, salt air sucks out all your moisture, and the sun reflects off the water and sand in places your sunscreen can't fully block. That's a lot of stuff happening at once.
Coastal Skin Troubles
These are some of the main skin issues we see in our Murrells Inlet customers:
- Salt and minerals that get in your pores and make your skin feel tight
- More sun exposure from the water and sand bouncing, especially when it's cloudy
- Humidity makes your skin make more oil, which makes people get acne when they never had it before
- Wind damages your skin's natural barrier faster than it repairs itself
Something else that's rarely mentioned. Wearing sunscreen will do nothing to fix those things. It just handles one of them. The salt deposits, the damaged barrier, the extra oil from the humidity, all of those things need a professional facial to fix them.
If you visit Huntington Beach State Park regularly, your skin deals with twice as much sun. It comes in with sun spots that it looks like came out of nowhere. More often than not, the injury took place over many months before you actually saw the mark.
As the American Academy of Dermatology notes, up to 90 percent of all visible skin aging is from the sun. When you add salt air to the picture, your skin goes into a losing war against two problems you can't stop.
This is why facials are even more essential here than where you'd find them inland. Your skin needs deep cleaning, hydration, and barrier repair to keep up with the sea air. Our treatments are tailored to the exact conditions of your skin now, not a one-size-fits-all treatment that ignores your seaside situation.
Select the Facial Best for Your Concerns
Facials are not all the same. That's the main thing we hear from our new Murrells Inlet clients.
Your skin might be getting oily around the jawline, something that a totally different treatment than the sun damage from years of walking the MarshWalk has left you with. Each face is unique. We just need to interpret that data accurately first. Here is a quick look at how our Murrells Inlet aestheticians approach some of the most frequently encountered conditions:
- Acne & congestion: Extraction & pore cleansing facials are the way to go. We remove what's trapped below the surface and help your pores return to proper function.
- Dull, rough texture: Dermaplaning & microdermabrasion exfoliate dead surface cells. You'll see and feel an immediate improvement.
- Early signs of aging & loss of elasticity: A collagen & firming facial supports the collagen your skin naturally creates.
- Hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone: We can help with a vitamin C facial or pigmentation facial, designed to target and diminish spots.
- Dehydration & dull skin: The skin barrier needs moisture to function well; you'll get that with a hydration facial.
Often, clients arrive with a specific issue in mind only for us to find another concern when we assess it closely. That's why we always take a close look at skin in the right lighting first. We're not guessing! Your skin changes throughout the year and is impacted by stress and hormonal shifts. What's good for your skin during March may not be the right option come August. A medical-grade treatment in summertime might be swapped out for an enzyme facial as winter sets in. Our skilled, trained team has seen countless clients during the time they've operated in Murrells Inlet, so how to find the right treatment for your problem area. Have no idea what direction you should take? Let us know and we'll work together to decide!
What to Expect from a Medical Facial
Most people are a little apprehensive when they get a facial for the first time. Don't worry! A facial treatment at our Murrells Inlet location follows a clear process. The process is straightforward, so it really doesn't leave a lot of room for confusion and uncertainty. First, your skin is analyzed by your esthetician who notes skin quality, asks about current concerns, and identifies underlying issues. Acne flare-ups, dehydrated skin, sun damage from beach-going in Murrells Inlet, we get a broad picture of the issues. From there, here is a general outline of the facial experience:

- Cleansing to remove makeup, sunscreen, and dirt, which can cause breakouts on the surface of your skin.
- Steaming or warm towels are used to open up your pores and make the skin more pliable.
- Exfoliating to remove dead skin cells using a technique that suits your skin type.
- Extractions, which are performed gently on your behalf.
- A mask or treatment serum that is customized for your skin goals.
- Hydration & SPF. This is what will keep your skin comfortable and protected for the remainder of the day.
Generally, the facial process takes around 60 minutes. If you just want a quick enzyme facial or a targeted extraction facial, we'll keep that appointment shorter. For treatments like our vitamin C facials with LED therapy we can take more time to layer those treatments in. First time clients most of the time tell us what they're worried about the most is the extraction facial, and it's not what most people think about it. We're not rough when we do your extractions and our licensed esthetician really takes her time. You may feel a little pressure around your nose or on your chin and that's about it. But most first time clients are surprised by what we say. Your face actually looks different before you even leave our building. You have a brighter skin tone, you have smaller-looking pores and that scrubbed-clean feeling without having any sensitivity. We will also always tailor your facial to what is going on with your skin at that time. Is it just oily in your T-Zone but dry around the cheeks? Well that's going to tell us which products we will use. If you're really sensitive from too much sun time? We won't do the stronger exfoliation. Your skin will always let you know what it needs and we will make those adjustments for you.
Facials Before Beach Time
This is the question we hear more than any other from April through October. "I want to get a facial done, but I am going to the beach on the weekend!" There are some great timing tips to keep in mind because you may need to do some scheduling! Here is the quick summary of our suggestions:
If your plan is to go to a beach or beach park like we do at Huntington Beach State Park or the MarshWalk in Murrells Inlet you should plan on getting your facial at least 48 hours before. If you get a chemical peel or extraction facial, we would even go out to three or four days before because your skin is more sensitive to the sun from those treatments. On the other hand, you won't have to deal with as much sensitivity on your skin when you go to a hydrating facial and/or collagen facial or other facials that may be geared toward more moisture and not as much exfoliation, so those you could get done a day before an event or something.
This is what we always tell our Murrells Inlet facials clients: Schedule deeper treatments like dermaplaning or microdermabrasion earlier in the week if your Saturday or Sunday includes a day out in the sun. You don't have to avoid facials during the summer if you plan ahead. If you do get an enzyme facial, get in the day before and do NOT forget to use sunscreen. This is the one we hear every single year. A client books their appointment with us for Friday. We do the enzyme facial, and then they go kayaking all day Saturday WITHOUT sunscreen. The following Monday they come back into the salon red, irritated and the redness and irritation actually made their skin WORSE than they had when they got here. That's no reflection on your facial. Rather, it's simply a case of bad timing.
Outdoor gatherings on the inlet also present other conditions, including wind and a saltwater atmosphere, as well as the UV rays. These are conditions that can dry out your skin, especially if it's just been treated. We suggest applying a light moisturizer over your SPF sunscreen if you're going to be out there for a long time.
By planning your appointments, you can avoid such occurrences. A simple call ahead to see "what kind of facial goes well with my plans this week" may help avoid a delay. We'd much rather help you make the right choice than have to repair the damage later.

How Often Should You Get Facials In Murrells Inlet?
Your proximity to the ocean is one thing that influences your skin.

Salt in the air, the humidity, and the sun that beats down on you all day are three factors that require your skin to constantly work to remain balanced. For this reason, the traditional advice to get a facial "once a year" is inappropriate in Murrells Inlet. We recommend that our clients compare their facials to professional cleanings. Nobody would consider neglecting the dental hygienist for a year and not suffer any repercussions.
So, then, how frequently should you be coming to us? Every four to six weeks is ideal for most people. This is based on the natural turnover cycle of the skin. But several things may be influencing the frequency of your appointments:
- Your skin conditions. If you have acne or sun damage, or fine lines starting to appear, then this will influence your visits.
- Your exposure to the outdoors. This is something that is especially important if you live near the MarshWalk or the Inlet.
- How old you are and how quickly your skin can repair itself. The older you get, the more time your skin needs to heal.
- How consistent you are with your sun protection. We will not be offended if you aren't as diligent as you should be.
In some cases, people require more frequent visits, every three to four weeks, for conditions such as frequent breakouts and melasma. We have clients like this who have been on the ocean for years without any protection. Because of this, their skin requires more than one treatment to correct it. And that's fine. Each appointment builds on the last one.
Once the skin has calmed down and become more stable, the visits can be stretched out to every six or eight weeks, for example, for maintenance purposes. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends having regular facials to preserve the skin's barrier and to support long-term improvement for any home treatments.
After just three months, clients who have been following a set facial schedule look far different than people who come in every so often just to have a facial twice a year. The skin has a better texture, a uniform tone, and the skin is clear of congestion.
Are you not sure of the schedule that you should follow? Just give us a call and we will be happy to work with you on this.
Your skin did not get here in a short time. And it will take some work to bring it to the point you desire. Luckily, we are good at helping you create a schedule here in Murrells Inlet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about facial treatments services in Murrells Inlet
How does living near the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk affect my skin between facial appointments?
The coastal environment here works against your skin every single day between visits. Salt deposits, humidity, and UV reflection off the water break down your skin barrier faster than it rebuilds. That's why we recommend coming in more often than someone living inland. Regular sessions help your skin keep up with what Murrells Inlet weather throws at it. Most of our local clients see the best results on a four to six week schedule.
How soon before a beach trip or outdoor event should I schedule a facial?
You should book your facial at least five to seven days before a big outdoor event or beach day. Fresh extractions and exfoliation can leave your skin slightly more sensitive to sun exposure right after treatment. Giving your skin a few days to settle means you get the glow without the risk. If you're planning a day out at Huntington Beach State Park, plan ahead. Last-minute facials the day before can backfire.
What should I do to prepare for my first facial appointment?
Come in with a clean face if you can, but it's not required. Skip retinol or strong exfoliating products for two to three days before your visit. Let us know about any skin sensitivities, recent sunburns, or active breakouts when you arrive. Your esthetician will do a full skin analysis before touching anything. The more honest you are about what's been going on with your skin, the better we can match the right treatment to your needs.
How do I know which facial treatment is right for my skin concern?
You don't have to figure that out on your own. That's our job. When you come in, we look at your skin under proper lighting and ask about your biggest concerns before choosing any treatment. Clogged pores need a different approach than dark spots or fine lines. Most people come in thinking they need one thing and we find something else going on underneath. We'll talk you through the options and pick the path that actually matches what your skin needs right now.
Will my skin look red or irritated after a facial treatment?
Some mild redness is normal right after a facial, especially if extractions were part of your session. It usually fades within a few hours. Most people look noticeably brighter and clearer before they even leave the room. We adjust every step based on your skin's sensitivity that day, so we're not pushing harder than your skin can handle. If you have a big event that evening, just let us know and we'll plan the treatment around that.
How often should Murrells Inlet residents get professional facial treatments?
Most people living near the coast do best with a facial every four to six weeks. Your skin completes a full renewal cycle roughly in that window, so that timing lines up with when your skin is ready to benefit most from treatment again. Coastal factors like salt air and high UV exposure here in Murrells Inlet mean your skin is dealing with more stress than average. Staying consistent is what keeps the results building instead of starting over every visit.
